Growing Demand for Geospatial Data
Jul 06, 2009
NASA, in conjunction with METI, a Japanese ministry, has developed the most accurate elevation model of the Earth to date, encompassing 99% of the land area. The ASTER project, as this survey is known, is not only broader, but significantly more accurate, with precision estimated at 20 m vertically and 30 m horizontally. While this particular data wouldn’t be useful in staking parcel corners, it is useful for various types of analysis, such as the effects of rising sea levels.
This type of ongoing analysis of the earth’s surface shows how far geospatial information has come, both in terms of quantity, and quality. As more and more research is conducted, this adds to the vast wealth of data that is available for us as civil engineers to consume when we go to design new projects.
Whether you’re looking to design access roads to a wind farm, or widening a freeway for a distance, having more accurate information about terrain, soil type, etc. adds value to the service you provide. As one example, incorporating geospatial data can help you save money by foreseeing problems before they arise. Stay tuned for KETIV’s webinar covering the use of geospatial data in a civil engineering project in August. You can sign up for this webinar here.
