Leading Process Integrator Benefits from ‘Smart Drawings’
Wastech Controls & Engineering, Inc. is a leading process system integrator specializing in the design and manufacture of industrial wastewater treatment, and chemical delivery systems. Wastech Controls & Engineering has been designing and building Process Systems and Automation Systems since 1986, using AutoCAD up until last year for their in-house templates to create and modify P&ID’s.
When the company started to work with KETIV Technologies, California’s leading Autodesk solutions provider, Wastech Controls & Engineering was using generic AutoCAD with in-house templates to create and modify P&ID’s. These drawings were not “smart” and were a mere collection of basic entities such as lines and blocks. The company saw a need for more accurate and timely P&ID development and realized it needed something more than a generalized CAD tool. Vice President of Operations, Kevin Holm implemented AutoCAD P&ID after KETIV demonstrated how this would improve quality, reduce production time, and eliminate rework.
It’s all about the process. Every design at Wastech Controls & Engineering starts with a P&ID, which defines the process flow, control strategies, construction materials, and equipment sizing. AutoCAD P&ID helps the company in three specific ways:
Graphical creation – AutoCAD P&ID consists of time-saving methods for inserting symbol libraries, including valves and actuators, which can be customized to meet the company’s specific requirements. AutoCAD P&ID also automates the process of clean-up during insertion of symbols logically.
Data driven graphical modifications – AutoCAD P&ID assures a direct correlation between the drawing and the intelligent attribute database. Tasks such as changing the diameter of a complete line, including all inline assets and nozzles, can be completed in a fraction of the time it would take with generic AutoCAD.
Intelligent Data Extraction – Using AutoCAD P&ID, Wastech Controls & Engineering applies intelligent tags to equipment, which has eliminated the cost associated with duplicates or other forms of manual error. This also shortens the review and approval cycle for a project. Intelligent, associative equipment lists are generated for accurate estimation of project cost.

Wastech Controls & Engineering has fully implemented AutoCAD P&ID for creating all their process and instrumentation diagrams.
