Ansys Maxwell 101
Master Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Simulation for Motors, Transformers & Actuators
Building the model
Get oriented in Maxwell and lay down the geometry and materials every simulation depends on.
.01
Interface, Workflow & Geometry Basics
Start here. This session gets you oriented in the Ansys Maxwell interface and shows how the project workflow is structured inside the Ansys Electronics Desktop. You’ll see the Project Manager, the Properties window, the 3D modeler, and how to start a new design with the right solution type for your problem — magnetostatic, eddy current, transient, or electric.
The session ends with a guided geometry walkthrough so the rest of the workflow has something real to work on. If you’ve opened Maxwell and felt lost between menus, this is the session that fixes that.

Geometry Creation & Modeling
Learn how to build and import geometry for electromagnetic simulation. This session covers native 3D modeling inside Maxwell, importing CAD from Autodesk Inventor, SpaceClaim, and STEP, and the geometry decisions that make or break your simulation downstream.
You’ll see how to simplify geometry without losing accuracy, use Boolean operations to build clean cores and windings, and structure assemblies so excitations and boundary conditions can be applied without fighting the model.

Working with Example Models & Materials
Walk through one of Maxwell’s built-in example models to see how a complete project comes together — and learn how to assign materials, including non-linear B-H curves, anisotropic materials, and permanent magnets. The Maxwell material library handles steel laminations and most core materials out of the box, and this session shows how to create or edit custom materials when it doesn’t.
You’ll also see how RMxprt templates accelerate motor design when you’re working with standard topologies (PMSM, induction, BLDC, etc.) — saving hours on the early sizing phase before you ever open Maxwell.

Boundary Conditions, Excitations, Parameters & Meshing
This is the session that separates a Maxwell simulation that converges from one that doesn’t. You’ll walk through assigning boundary conditions — magnetic field tangent, symmetry, periodicity, impedance — and defining excitations across voltage, current, current density, coil terminals, and full winding setups.
You’ll then build a mesh that actually converges. The session covers Maxwell’s adaptive meshing, mesh operations for transient problems that can’t adapt, and the link-mesh trick for transferring a refined static-solver mesh into a transient analysis. If your simulations have been failing here, this is the fix.

Analysis Setup & Solver Configuration
Configure Maxwell’s solvers for the physics you’re actually trying to capture. This session walks through choosing the right solver — magnetostatic for DC and permanent-magnet problems, eddy current for AC and induction, transient for rotating machines and time-varying behavior, electric and electrostatic for capacitive and DC-conduction problems — and tuning the solution setup so you get accurate results without burning hours of solve time.
Covers convergence criteria, adaptive passes, time-step selection for transient analyses, and when to bring in the Eddy Current A-Phi solver for challenging power-magnetics and busbar problems.

Solution Monitoring & Parametric Studies
Move from a single-point simulation to a real design study with Optimetrics — Maxwell’s parametric, optimization, sensitivity, and tuning engine. You’ll see how to sweep design variables like motor speed, air gap, magnet thickness, or slot geometry across a range; run all the cases automatically; and analyze how force, torque, losses, and efficiency change in response.
The session also covers how to monitor a long-running solve, read convergence behavior in flight, and know when to stop, restructure the model, or scale up to HPC / cloud solve for a sweep that would take days on a workstation.

Interpreting Results
The simulation is done — now what does it actually mean? This final session shows how to extract and interpret the outputs that drive design decisions: force and torque on rotors and stators, eddy-current and core losses, inductance and resistance matrices, flux linkage, back-EMF, and field plots that turn physics into something a design team can act on.
You’ll also see how to validate Maxwell results against expected behavior — and where to take the work next: into thermal coupling with Icepak or Fluent, structural and vibration analysis with Mechanical, or full multiphysics workflows in Ansys Workbench. Electromagnetic results rarely live alone in a real product.
